Hello! I’m Luke, and this is my first ever website. I’ve definitely not started and given up on several other blog sites since 2016!
In 2011, I enrolled at UNC Charlotte University with the sole purpose of one day becoming an English professor. I loved studying literature in high school because it was more complex than just finding one “correct” answer. Things could be interpreted differently by different people, as long as you had evidence to back up your claim.
I graduated with my B.A. in 2013 and was ready to enroll in UNCC’s English graduate program. After failing the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), I enrolled in a private college, Gardner–Webb University, which had no such requirement.
I landed my first teaching job in 2016 as an Adjunct Instructor at Blue Ridge Community College. I was 27, still living with my parents, and vastly unprepared to manage a class of students who were older than me.
Still, I kept trudging along, taking on adjunct positions and working on my M.A. degree. Finally, in 2019, in my two-bedroom Section 8 apartment, I completed my thesis and earned my Master’s degree! I was so excited—finally, I could get some real teaching jobs!
I spent some time doing disability advocacy work, helping people with disabilities in nursing homes find independent living. This is something I’ve become passionate about and is a key reason for making this site.
Now, in a post-pandemic, AI-driven, politically divided world, I realize that the English professor roles I romanticized in my early 20s either no longer exist or are slowly dying out. It’s a jarring feeling—being in your mid-30s and realizing that the career you worked toward for so many years doesn’t seem possible anymore.
That’s why I started this site. I want to spread disability awareness and share my general thoughts—not to seek a future job, but simply because I want to. Currently, I’m married to an absolutely amazing person (who I hope will like this About page when I show it to her for feedback). I’m going through a career transition, hopefully into something in writing, editing, or disability advocacy for a nonprofit. Oh, and I also play chess, guitar, and just recently bought a Nintendo Switch 2!
